On the roofs, rows of moss-covered yin-yang tiles evoke a sense of antiquity and permanence against the passage of time. Surrounding each house, one finds hand-stacked stone walls that not only provide protection but also create a unique landscape reflecting the craftsmanship and resilience of the local people - all coming together to form a fairy-tale scene amidst the majestic karst plateau.
Beyond its architecture, the natural scenery also makes Lô Lô Chải an enchanting destination. Each season, the village dons a new coat. In spring - peach and pear blossoms bloom brilliantly, decorating the golden earth houses. In summer, lush green cornfields stretch out with a sense of vibrant life.
The autumn brings ripe, golden rice fields and a peaceful picture of prosperity. Winter’s wisps of kitchen smoke rise from the yin-yang tiled roofs, conjuring a cozy warmth amidst the freezing weather.
Lô Lô Chải forms a sanctuary for the unique cultural identity of the Lô Lô people. Their vibrant traditional costumes, featuring intricate hand-embroidery, reflect both the skill of Lô Lô women and the long-standing heritage of the community. During festivals, the villagers in their traditional attire create a colorful mosaic against the mountain backdrop.
The roots of the ancestor worship ceremony of the Black Lô Lô lie in folk beliefs and gives meaning to the folk saying “when drinking water, remember its source”. In 2012, UNESCO recognized this ritual as a National Intangible Cultural Heritage. Additionally, folk music and accompanying graceful traditional festival dances create a solemn and joyful atmosphere, captivating all who witness it.
Visitors to Lô Lô Chải do more than just sightsee; they have the opportunity to immerse themselves in community life, converse with locals, and participate in traditional cultural activities. The local cuisine, rich with the flavors of the mountains, plays an essential role in the journey. In highland markets serve the ever-present thắng cố, a culinary staple made primarily from the meat and organs of horses, cows, or buffalo simmered thoroughly with herbs to create a rich, aromatic flavor. Served hot with forest vegetables, mèn mén (steamed corn meal), and paired with Tam Giác beer, than its ubiquity and familiarity make it a symbol of hospitality and community bonding.
In recent years, Lô Lô Chải has become a bright spot for community-based tourism. Traditional rammed-earth houses have been converted into homestays that provide modern comforts while retaining their ancient architectural charm. One appealing aspect involves joining the daily rhythm of the locals: going to the fields to harvest corn or forest vegetables, cooking rustic dishes in cozy kitchens, and grilling bánh đá (stone cakes) or sweet corn over charcoal. Afterwards, many settle in to enjoy evening performances of traditional flutes, drums, and folk songs.
On October 17, 2025, UN Tourism officially recognized Lô Lô Chải as one of the “Best Tourism Villages 2025”. This serves as a testament to the powerful allure of Vietnam's community tourism model. This global honor confirms that Lô Lô Chải possesses all the essential elements of a leading rustic tourism destination: pristine landscapes, unique traditional architecture, distinct ethnic culture, and active community participation.
Following this recognition, Lô Lô Chải has entered a new phase of green growth and digital transformation. The primary focus remains the preservation of its soul - the rammed-earth houses, yin-yang tiles, and hand-stacked stone walls. Efforts to protect cultural identity, from costumes to folk music, ensure that tourism growth does not dilute long-standing values.
Lô Lô Chải - the fairy-tale village at the northernmost tip of the fatherland - is not just a travel destination; it is a symbol of cultural preservation and sustainable development. Its ancient beauty and sacred position under the Lũng Cú flag tower make this small village a source of pride for Tuyên Quang and Vietnam as a whole, truly deserving of its title as a “Best Tourism Village by UN Tourism 2025” .
