Ancient tea forests: Living memories of the mountains

Following Ms. Hà, we entered the primary tea-growing area of Giàng B Village - home to hundreds of ancient Shan Tuyết tea trees, some dating back several centuries. Their rugged, moss-covered trunks and wide canopies stand like giant umbrellas amidst the mountain mists. This space  preserves a living memory where humanity, nature, and time converge.

Ms. Hà paused by an ancient tree, gently touching its trunk - a familiar gesture. “The Mông people consider the tea tree the soul of the village. Before there were roads or electricity, these forests sustained the entire community. Protecting the trees preserves the memory of our ancestors” she shared.

Suối Giàng’s Shan Tuyết tea thrives under unique conditions: high altitude, dense fog, and stable temperatures. A layer of white down as fine as snow covers the thick buds - the hallmark of a distinct flavor found nowhere else.

To harvest a perfect “one bud, two leaves” set, the pickers must wait for the exact moment: when the frost has melted, the sun has just risen, the air neither rainy nor humid. On some days, the yield is only a few kilograms. According to Ms. Hà, “Shan Tuyết tea is not for those in a hurry. A tea maker must be patient and show 'etiquette' toward the trees, for they are the blessings of the mountains”.

The art of preserving original flavors

Inside her family’s modest production space, the tea-making process follows traditional methods. Each batch goes through four stages: pan-firing, rolling, fermenting, and drying - all done by hand.  Ovens heathe buds high heat to wither, workers then hand-roll them until the leaves curl and release their resin, followed by repeated firings to stabilize the aroma. The final step, “polishing” over glowing charcoal, holds secret to the tea’s deep sweetness and long-lasting aftertaste.

“The trees live for hundreds of years, so each batch I make must be treated with that same level of respect” Ms. Hà explained. “A single careless step, and the true flavor of the mountains is lost”.

In the cozy room, a simple yet evocative scene unfolds: adults firing the tea while children help with packaging. Then they carefully fold each bag  preserving a harvest not just by hand, but by heartfelt devotion.

The value of tea: Beyond appearance

When asked about the difference between various types of Shan Tuyết tea, Ms. Hà simply smiled: “Money alone cannot buy ‘clean’ tea. And not all clean tea manages to retain the true essence of the mountains”.

Each tea, she believes, reflects a different level of care - from the harvest and selection of buds to the meticulousness of processing. However, the appearance does not constitute the most important element,  this comes from the soul of the tea, which comes from the ancient trees, the careful harvesting and meticulous packing. Thus through human hands, each bud becomes a perfectly preserved gift from the earth.

When tea becomes a cultural narrative

Moving beyond tea production, Ms. Hà has developed a new path: connecting tea with cultural experiences. Visitors to Suối Giàng can follow her into the forest, hear stories of the "Ancestor tea trees," participate in the crafting process, or simply sit in a quiet tea space to enjoy a hot cup and listen to the lore of the land.

“I want people to understand that Shan Tuyết is more than just tea. It is the story of an entire mountain region - of the people, the memories, and the way we live with nature” she said.

For generations, the Mông have practiced rituals such as the worship of the Ancestor tea trees . These embody more than just beliefs; they express gratitude toward nature - a sentiment that modern life often forgets.

A cup of tea: A way back home

In today’s fast-paced world, the Suối Giàng region maintains its own slow, steady, and profound rhythm. Perhaps the most lasting impression of a trip here comes not just from the fragrance of the tea, but from a novel feeling - the sensation of touching something primal and pure.

Watching Ms. Bùi Thị Hà cherish every bud, one realizes that the value of tea lies not in the final product, but in the underlying philosophy of life. It is about patience toward nature, finding contentment in small things, and relearning how to live slowly in an increasingly hurried world.

Some things cannot be done quickly, cannot be mass-produced, and certainly cannot be done carelessly. A Shan Tuyết bud -  must wait for the right moment, the right weather, and the right delicate hands to touch it without bruising its soul. Similarly, only through time and stillness can we truly understand the value of resilience and authenticity.

In a cup of Shan Tuyết tea, one tastes more than just leaves; one senses the clouds, the mountain air, the dew, the passage of time, and the patience of generations bound to these hills. Suối Giàng, more than a tea region, names a place where every bud quietly safeguards the vital energy of heaven and earth.
